Why I Joined TEAM28: Suzy SAnchez

A former athlete, coach, official and staff member of USA Weightlifting, Suzy Sanchez has now made the “natural” next step to continue to support the sport and organization by becoming a bronze member of Team28. The USA Weightlifting Foundation chatted with Suzy to learn more of why she wanted to be part of Team28.

What inspired you to join Team28?

“I have been an athlete, coach, official, and staff member of USA Weightlifting so for me becoming a donor, felt like the natural next step to continue to support the sport and organization that has provided me with so many opportunities, friends, and memories.”

What personal connection do you have to Weightlifting?

“I began weightlifting in 2008 and immediately fell in love with chasing the PR's and the potential to travel internationally to compete. Unfortunately, I did not come from wealth or have a support system to allow me to cover the costs associated with training and competing. Luckily, I met some amazing folks in the sport that helped me when I needed it, which allowed me to eventually become an Olympic hopeful and move to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in 2013. While I did not become an Olympian, I knew that one day I wanted to help pay it forward and support others as I had been supported.”

How has Weightlifting impacted your life?

“I would not be where I am without weightlifting. Being an athlete opened doors to networks I never would have accessed, and through those connections, I have built a career and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

What kind of impact do you hope your support will make?

“I just hope to help alleviate in some small way the financial stress that is associated with being a world-class athlete!”

Why are donor programs and foundations like Team28 and the USA Weightlifting Foundation important for Team USA athletes?

“They help provide direct support for athletes on or near the Olympic team with transparency that may not be as clear when being managed directly by the NGB.”

Why would you encourage others to join Team28?

“I encourage anyone to support however they can, whether that is as a coach, official or admin, but if you have the means, I encourage you to become a donor because your dollars will help our athletes bring home the hold in 2028.”

What benefit of being part of Team28 excites you the most?

“I like knowing that my support is going directly to the athletes!”
